Advent and Christmas

The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light.
For a child has been born for us,
a son given to us.

Isaiah 9:2a, 6a

Our countdown to Christmas is about to begin.  Advent starts on Sunday November 28th.  Our preparations begin with a glorious and uplifting Advent Carols service, which includes Advent hymns, readings, poems and reflections.  Our singing will be led by the 4 Villages Community Choir under the direction of our choirmaster, Tony Edwards.  Do join us if you can.

Daily through Advent, we will be exploring the four songs of the Nativity Story: Zechariah's Song (John the Baptist's father's song - the Benedictus), Mary's Song (the magnificent Magnificat), the Angels' Song (on the hillside above Jerusalem, Gloria in Excelsis), and Simeon's Song (on seeing the baby Jesus in the temple, his moving Nunc Dimittis).  We'll be wondering how these songs can inspire our own song as Christmas approaches.

This year, our Advent Daily Prayers and Reflections are inspired by the four Spirit-filled songs in the Christmas story: Zechariah's song, which he sang when his son John is born; Mary's song, which she sang when she shared her good news with her cousin Elizabeth; the Angels' song, which was sung above the hillside overlooking Bethlehem; and, Simeon's song, which he sang on seeing the baby Jesus in the temple in Jerusalem.  May these songs inspired your own song this Advent into Christmas.

And here is what we have planned for the Christmas season.

In the lead up to Christmas, we will be holding two seasonal coffee mornings.  One of them has the added treat of a Christmas Tree Festival with live Christmas music.  Do come and join us for a mince pie or two!

If you can't make any of the services, we will also have a simple Advent into Christmas service on Zoom on Sunday 19 December 2021 at 6pm.  Contact Revd Katrina for the Zoom invite.

And, Christmas would not be Christmas without the light and joy of children holding their Christingles as we all sing Away in a Manger.  On Christmas Eve, we invite you to come and Christingle at Overstone Church at 4pm.  Weather permitting, we will be able to go outside to light our Christingles.  Do come and join us and collect Christingle goody bags to take home.
